Manitoba Flyfishing

Manitoba is an undiscovered flyfishing destination with trout that would compete with the best flyfishing locations in the world. It is not uncommon to be the only one on the lake. A 25"-30" brown or rainbow is a real possibility on every cast but these large fish do not come easy. The lakes are very fertile and matching hatches with good patterns is a must for successful days on the water. Most of the lakes I have listed are catch and release or have a one fish under 18" regulation. Manitoba also has a strict barbless hook regulation for all fishing.

FLIPPR (Fish and Lake Improvement Program for the Parkland Region) is helping to make Manitoba one of the best places to catch a huge stillwater trout in North America. Check out their website from the links page.

*Practice Catch and Release

Bower Lake

Bower is one of the toughest lakes you will ever chase trout in but the rewards are worth it. Located in the Turtle Mountains just North of the International Peace Gardens on the North Dakota/Manitoba border it has truly huge rainbows. Fish it early or late in the season for your best chances to hook into the fish of a lifetime. Rainbows to 28" are not uncommon here.

William Lake

William is another lake in the Turtle Mountains. It has nice browns but also is infested with perch. William also has some big bass.

Patterson Lake

Patterson is a true trophy trout lake located in the Parkland region of Manitoba. The lake produces world class rainbows and browns but they do not come easy. Fish up to 30" are swimming in it's depths.

Regulations: Electric motors only, No Bait, Limit is one trout under 18".

Corstophine Lake

Corstophine is a new Parkland lake that was stocked in the fall of 2007 with browns and tigers. This hopefully will be another Patterson Lake in a few years. Corstophine Lake is near Patterson.

Regulations: Electric motors only, No Bait, Limit is one trout under 18".

Pybus Lake

Pybus is a new Parkland lake that was stocked in the fall of 2007 with rainbows and tigers. This will hopefully be another Patterson Lake in a few years. Pybus Lake is near Patterson.

Regulations: Electric motors only, No Bait, Limit is one trout under 18".

Persse Lake

Persse is a new lake near the Duck Mountains that will be stocked in the spring of 2009 with rainbows and browns. This will hopefully be another Patterson Lake in a few years. It's going to be great to have another trout lake near Twin.

Regulations: Electric motors only, No Bait, Limit is one trout under 18".

Twin Lake

Twin is a amazing tiger trout fishery located in the Duck Mountains. Tigers are a cross between a brown and a brook trout. They are some of the strongest fish you will ever catch. Twin is a great place for a new stillwater flyfisherman. Twin is a 100% Catch and Release lake. Twin was known for being an easy place to catch fish but as they get bigger they get much harder to catch.

Regulations: Electric motors only, No Bait, All trout must be released.

West Goose

A small lake located in the town of Roblin. West Goose had very large rainbows and browns but summer killed in 2008.

East Goose

East Goose is located just on the other side of Highway 83 from West Goose and has been producing trout to 29" the last few years.

Perch Lake

Perch is a catch and release lake located in the Duck Mountains. A great place to go when the wind has blown you off the other lakes. The lake has large trout and bass.

Regulations: All fish must be released.

Gull Lake

A large lake located in the Duck Mountains with many rainbows some of them 25" and larger.

Black Beaver Lake

Located in the Duck Mountains a short hike is required to fish Black Beaver but the solitude is what gives this lake it's attraction. Black Beaver Lake has 20" brook trout and rainbow trout to 26". Every spring rumors the lake winterkilled go around and usually they are just rumors but this yeat they might be true.

Shilliday

Shilliday is located in the Ducks. A good lake to flyfish if it's windy. It has many rainbows but also has lots of flooded timber which makes landing a nice trout a challenge.

Vini Lake

Vini is located in the Porcupine Mountains. The Porcupines are very remote don't expect to find a campground with power or make a call on your cell phone. Vinny does not see much fishing pressure and it has a lot of fish. The rainbows are extremely strong in this lake. Very large trout are in Vini but they are also very hard to catch. This is not the place to take your 2 wheel drive car because your off the beaten path and the roads are rough.

Gass Lake

A Porcupine Mountain lake that requires a short hike into. It had a large amount of small fish the last time I was there a few years ago so now those rainbows should be good sized.

*Manitoba has many more lakes with large trout that can be flyfished. I just listed the more popular flyfishing lakes.
